A2 / THE FUTURE OF DEATH / PART 5
THE STOREY GALLERY, LANCASTER : 23-24 OCTOBER 2009
A person enters the space and lies down. A 2nd person enters carrying earth, buries the 1st and lies down. A 3rd enters, buries the 2nd and lies down. A 4th buries the 3rd and lies down. Audience members may also lie down.
This is an evolving performance installation in which 40 local people gradually bury each other with earth, following workshops exploring the inter-relationship between Living and Dying.
London based A2 Company began research for this sensitive piece working with the terminally ill in palliative care, seeking to discover the changes of heart made on the verge of death, and how this knowledge might be put into practice.
“Their performances are, in effect, a kind of living gift” The Times
WHEN DOES THE BEGINNING SUDDENLY APPEAR?
A2 presented the outcome of a 10-day workshop residency at Storey Gallery, Lancaster exploring the interrelationship between living and dying, with diverse people / residents from Lancaster.
Since its first presentation at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 2005, the future of death has been recreated in Vienna/part 2, Ljubljana/part 3, and Dortmund/part 4. Each version is unique and reflective of the time, place and new personalities of the different people involved.

MY ROLE AS PRODUCTION ASSISTANT AND PARTICIPANT
I was employed by Lancaster University / LICA / Nuffield Theatre to work as a Production Assistant on this installation-performance. My role was to market the event, and also to recruit and manage the 40 volunteers during the workshop residency, as well as to be general artists assistant. I also participated in all of the workshops and in the 2 final performances.
London based A2 Company is a collaboration between artists Anton Mirto and Alit Kreiz. Together they create experimental performance and installation projects exploring new personal, social and emotional language forms, which aim to interrogate and reflect the human experience.
